WILD BIRD EXPO™ 2018

2018 Wild Bird Expo™ Best Birding Retailer Award & Share Night Winners

Grant Toellner, Vice President of Gold Crest Distributing, recently presented awards that were given out at the 2018 Wild Bird Expo™ in Mexico, MO the first week of October. Toellner stated, “Wedel’s Nursery, Florist, & Garden Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan were awarded Best Large Store with a Birding Emphasis. They offer an expansive selection of Wild Bird Products and sponsor their local radio station’s show called “Birdwatch.” Front Range Birding Company in Littleton, Colorado was awarded with Best Small Store with a Birding Emphasis.

They do an excellent job of educating their community through monthly bird walks and a very well-constructed website that makes it easy to get involved, shop, or learn. Rucker Pet with locations in Alpharetta & Cumming, Georgia landed Best Birding Department in a Multi-Line Store. Their dedication to educating employees clearly translates to their success with customers and reputations within their communities. Best Birding Department as a Funding Source for a Nonprofit Organization was won by Eagle’s Nest Bookstore located in Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, Maryland. This group operates as an entirely volunteer organization and they encourage birding early on in the community by supporting Environmental Education programs for 4th & 6th graders and putting funds towards the Annual Eagle Festival and Youth Fishing Day. Best New Birding Store or Department was awarded to The Bluebird Shed in Bella Vista, Arkansas. Throughout their brief, but successful, existence they continuously collaborate with the Bella Vista Bluebird Society as well as support avian research at the local university. Congratulations to all of the BBRA winners!”

Brenda Wright, Wild Bird Expo™ Show Coordinator, added, “During our share night, winners were also chosen in various categories based on marketing materials that they had submitted to be judged by their peers. Best Advertisement was awarded to Wedel’s Garden Center. The Bird House – Rochester won Best Direct Mail. My Backyard claimed the title of Best Display. For The Birds – Georgetown walked away with Best Special or Promotion and Birds & Beasley’s won for Best Social Media.” Toellner added, “We are very appreciative of all our vendors who help make the Wild Bird Expo™ the largest gathering of wild bird vendors and retailers in the world. Our goal of providing a venue where new products can be inexpensively introduced into the wild bird market and a forum where retailers can openly exchange success stories and opportunities has been achieved again in 2018.” Toellner concluded, “We’ve already started working on details of the 2019 Wild Bird Expo™ and we encourage everyone to go to www.WildBirdExpo.com in future months for updates.”

From Left to Right: Chip Clouse with Front Range Birding Company, Butch Tetzlaff with The Bluebird Shed, Kit Bradshaw & Sue Fischer with Friends of Blackwater, Dianne Martin with Rucker Pet, and Barbara Hann & Terrie Schwartz with Wedel's Nursery, Florist & Garden Center

ONLY 1 WEEK Remaining Until this Year's Wild Bird Expo™!We are SO CLOSE!

Here are some tips before you travel this way!
- Bring your walking shoes! The warehouse is pretty big and there's a lot to see and do in 3 days.
- Missouri weather is famous for being unpredictable. This time of year, we are often cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. The forecast as of now says to expect warm weather with highs on Wednesday in the upper 70's.
- Be prepared to discuss and/or share your calendar of events and the promotions you have planned throughout the year. One of the benefits to Share Night is the retailer-to-retailer fellowship.
- Don't forget your business cards!! You'll be amazed how many times they will come in use during seminars, Share Night, with GCD employees, and with fellow retailers.
- We suggest attending the expo with a co-worker, in two's or more. Remember to split up your staff to cover more ground. Send one to shop, one to the vendor booths, one for seminars, etc.
- This is a large show, so don't wait to get started or you will be rushed on the last day. Use the last day to follow-up and finalize any business previously discussed.
There's a lot going on at the Wild Bird Expo™! We want to help you maximize your time!

We Have a Challenge for You!

We already have Ever Drinkware with clever and humorous sayings. Here are our newest options for examples:

What we need you to do is work with your team to come up with some clever or humorous sayings that are birding or nature related and send them to beth@goldcrestdistributing.com

We will choose our favorite and the winner will receive a set of 4 Ever Drinkware glasses!

Order Placement Reminders:
During the Expo on October 2nd, 3rd & 4th, anyone placing their usual fulfillment orders should expect some delay in processing time. We DO NOT close down during the Expo; however, during the show, we cannot guarantee same day shipment.
If you have a time sensitive order, we would advise that you submit it sooner than per usual and be sure to mark the order "RUSH" or give us a call with details on your shipment. We will do our very best to process every order efficiently and timely.
Thank you for your understanding!

While you are here at the Expo, you may place as many orders as you'd like; however, the following guidelines must be followed:
- Orders you plan to take immediately with you that need pulled, packed and be ready before you leave the warehouse will require at least 2 hours to prepare and have ready to load into your vehicle. Please plan to alert our team 2 hours before the order is needed. Thank you!
- All Fall Orders MUST SHIP BY 11/16/18
- You will only be allowed 1 Spring Order and it MUST SHIP BY 3/1/19
Any orders placed by an attendee of this year's Expo - during the show - without a specified ship date will ship as soon as possible. This could be as early as 2 to 3 days after the show, but will most likely take upwards of a week to two weeks for the order(s) to be processed. If you have ANY orders with a desired ship date, you MUST let us know when submitting the order to us.

Don't forget your Share Night materials! Send your Share Night materials in advance digitally by Friday, September 28th and we'll print out your examples and have them ready for you before you even arrive. Submit materials to beth@goldcrestdistributing.com

The Wild Bird Expo™ and 5th annual Heart of America Gift Show™

October 2, 3, & 4

Mark your calendars and save the date because on October 2-4 birding retailers from all across the country will be migrating to Mexico, Missouri for the 2018 Wild Bird Expo™, to be held in conjunction with the 5th annual Heart of America Gift Show™!

"Over 40% of households in the U.S. help their backyard neighbors and feed the birds," says Mel Toellner, also known as Birdman Mel, owner of the family operated business Gold Crest Distributing that is sponsoring the Expo. "Along with feeding the birds these folks also take pride in making the backyard a fun, relaxing oasis by adding wind chimes, fountains, and other garden decor to fit their lifestyle."

The Wild Bird Expo™ has become known as North America's premier wild bird show and event and boasts the largest gathering of wild bird industry retailers, vendors and experts. Over 100 backyard nature vendors and 600+ retailers from 44 states and 3 provinces of Canada attended in 2017.

Brenda Wright, coordinating this year's Wild Bird Expo™, is pleased to announce a great line-up of seminar speakers. This includes an attendee favorite Stan Tekiela who will give a presentation on "Backyard Birds: Welcomed Guests at Our Gardens and Feeders," along with Diana Ratliff on "Online Strategies to Improve Q4 Sales." Also joining us will be Steve Endres on "Monarch Butterflies" from the All Seasons Wild Bird Store. As always 30 ideas in 30 minutes will be put on by fellow retailers.

Several other popular Expo features also remain part of the schedule including the opening night Oktoberfest celebration, Share Night, and the latest new products and services, plus much more.

Wright states, "We anticipate another overall record crowd as folks who come once, seem to come back year after year as I think they enjoy the show but also find some great new products to promote for upcoming seasonal sales and for the following spring. "

Other details and features of this year's show will be released in the coming weeks.

As Always Here are Some Friendly Reminders and Tips:

  • Know what you want to achieve by visiting the show. If your boss is sending you, know what your boss wants you to achieve by attending.
  • Have a plan for which vendors you want to visit and organize your list into two parts - "must see" and "want to see" companies. For a current list of attending vendors, see below!
  • Decide how much time you want to spend at the show and then at each booth. Allow extra time for browsing, warehouse aisle shopping, distractions and visiting the garage sale tent.
  • Coming alone is fine, but coming with a partner or two really helps maximize the show's potential for what you bring back home. Split up and cover more ground!
  • Pack comfortable shoes and clothing conducive to walking on concrete floors. Remember to leave room for things to bring back!
  • Plan the seminars you want to attend. Split sessions with your colleagues to maximize data gathering.
  • Take advantage of networking opportunities. Bring plenty of business cards!
